Val d'Isère is a world famous ski resort located (45°27′N, 6°58′E) in the Savoie region in France. It is on the border of the Vanoise National Park created in 1963.  Along with nearby Tignes the area forms part of the the Espace Killy, the self-titled "Most Beautiful Ski Area in the World." Beauty aside, the combined space is one of the largest ski areas in the world.

Val d'Isère can offer something for all levels of skiers.  The snow cover tends to be one of the best in Europe, which is helped by its altitude.  This allows skiing to take place until the end of April, beginning of May.

Entertainers, ice and snow sculpting and weekly markets line the streets at various points of the week.  Ice diving, ice climbing and ice karting are all on offer nearby for the adrenaline junkies amongst you. 

FAST FACTS:

  • The Face du Bellevarde was the scene of the men's downhill race as part of the 1992 Winter Olympics.
  • The Alpine Skiing World Cup event in early December on the OK run has taken place since 1955.
  • Val d'Isère will host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2009.
